High School Mentoring: In the “Pro Scholar” program, high school students cultivate empowering mentoring relationships with experienced adults through the Center. Our dedicated specialists collaborate with youth workers to identify potential mentees, ensuring that every student benefits from a positive mentorship. Mentors are carefully selected based on their association with the Cabral Leadership & Innovation Center, participation in Cape Verdean Student Associations at local colleges, or their proven ability to work effectively with youth. We embrace the diversity of our mentor-mentee relationships, avoiding any stereotypes or stigmas.
College Exploration: “Pro Scholar” recognizes that belief in one’s potential to attend college and the importance of higher education are pivotal factors in a student’s journey. We immerse our 9th and 10th graders in MEFA’s Early College Planning curriculum, guided by our career specialist. Furthermore, college-bound seniors engage in peer mentoring, partnering with mentors from local colleges and trade schools who share inspiring stories of their own paths to college success. This service is accessible to both members and non-members, amplifying our commitment to nurturing college-bound aspirations.
College Bound: As part of “Pro Scholar,” our Center Specialists guide juniors and seniors, ensuring they meet standardized testing requirements (SAT, PSAT, ACT, TOEFL) for college admission. Students also explore college options under the expert guidance of our specialists, visiting local campuses to gain insights into their preferences. This service is available to both members and non-members, reaffirming our commitment to equitable access.
Standardized Test Preparation: Young learners are provided tailored classes designed to offer crucial support and practice for standardized tests such as the SAT, ACT, and TOEFL. Our classes focus on test-taking strategies, practice tests, and thorough review of answers. This service is open to both members and non-members, emphasizing our dedication to leveling the playing field.
College Application Assistance: In the “Pro Scholar” program, Center Specialists engage with seniors early in the school year to confirm their readiness for graduation and college entry. Through personalized one-on-one sessions, seniors initiate, revise, and finalize their college applications and essays. This service is accessible to both members and non-members.
College Fair: Twice a year, the Center collaborates with local colleges and universities to host a College Fair at the Center. The event also features representatives from organizations like City Year, providing youth with a comprehensive overview of available opportunities. The fair covers application assistance, financial aid guidance, and the college entrance timeline for both students and their families. Held during the summer and April Break, this service is accessible to members and non-members.
Financial Aid Assistance: Upon completing their college applications, applicants in the “Pro Scholar” program are guided to apply for at least one scholarship. Center Specialists offer valuable support in identifying additional scholarship or grant opportunities, ensuring the completion of forms and the timely submission of required recommendations, nominations, and paperwork. This service is open to both members and non-members, reinforcing our dedication to making college dreams a reality.
